Office of the Superintendent
Winslow Unified School District No. 1
September 3, 2020
Dear Winslow Families,
A decision has been made in collaboration with the Superintendent, Governing Board, and site administrators to begin the process of a soft reopening of schools. The decision was not made lightly and many factors were taken into consideration. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services school reopening benchmarks, Navajo County has met the three suggested health metrics to reopen schools. The benchmarks suggest that counties meet three health metrics for two consecutive weeks. This was accomplished in Navajo County for the September 3 reporting period from August 9-August 22. In addition, opening school provides a safe place for all students and promotes social-emotional health. Providing an opportunity for in person learning will support working families and academically disadvantaged students.
The choice to send your child back to school is strictly up to each family. Know that Winslow Unified School District takes the safety of all students seriously. To the best of our ability and in accordance with health and safety guidelines, non-pharmaceutical practices and procedures will be in place to keep every child and staff member safe. These practices include mandatory wearing of face masks, prescreening students before entering the classroom, hand washing, sanitizing, disinfecting, using individual water bottles at drinking stations, dividers on tabletops, teaching proper coughing technique, prepackaged lunch and breakfast, and adherence of social distancing guidelines where possible.
The health benchmarks will be reevaluated on a weekly basis in order to monitor local health conditions. Families will be contacted by each school to confirm their choice of returning in person or continuing with at home learning.
The following is the schedule for the soft reopening:
K – 2nd (Bonnie Brennan and Jefferson) – September 14, 2020
3rd – 4th (Bonnie Brennan) – September 21, 2020
5th – 6th (Washington) – September 28, 2020
7th – 8th (Winslow Jr. High School) – October 12, 2020
9th – 12th (Winslow High School) – October 12, 2020
Thank you for selecting WUSD as your premier choice for educating your children.
Kathryn Zanin, Superintendent
